Plaquenil is a DMARD which has been prescribed for years to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases. When the first biologic DMARD received FDA-approval in 1998, and as other biologics followed in subsequent years, it appeared as though Plaquenil would become less prescribed. Plaquenil is sometimes prescribed to treat inflammation in people with psoriatic arthritis. Plaquenil is also known by its drug name, Hydroxychloroquine. Plaquenil should be used with caution in people with skin symptoms of psoriasis since it can cause a severe flare-up. Scientists have now identified about 25 genetic variants that make a person more likely to develop psoriatic disease. At the University of Michigan, Dr. J. T. Elder and his team of researchers have identified several areas on the human genome where more than one gene may be involved in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

I started on plaquenil for Psoriatic Arthritis in 2015. 200mg twice daily. I didn’t feel too bad but a huge bout of stress made my symptoms worse. I then started methotrexate in addition to plaquenil. My rheumatologist suggested once daily Plaquenil and that seemed okay. After a while he said I coujd stop it as he was not sure if it was. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. I was diagnosed 10 years ago with Psoriatic Arthritis and have tried many different treatments including Plaquenil. The only thing that has helped, although slightly, is Humira. I cannot take methotrexate because I have a fatty liver and methotrexate is tough on the liver.
