    Retinal toxicity plaquenil

The most common side effect associated with its use is retinal toxicity, which may be irreversible. Therefore, it is pertinent to know the findings, risk factors, and screening tests necessary to prevent retinal damage.

The risk of a toxicity sharply increases after 5 years, with majority of cases of retinotoxicity occurring in patients that have had a cumulative dose exceeding 1000g of hydroxychloriquine Plaquenil. This level is reached in about 7 years with the most common daily dose of Plaquenil, 400 mg/day 200 bid. If we extrapolate the use of long-term hydroxychloroquine at KPNC to the entire US population, approximately 350 000 patients should receive annual eye screening by current guidelines. 9 Therefore, screening for hydroxychloroquine retinal toxicity is an important economic and patient safety issue. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine use cannot be completely prevented, but effective screening should recognize retinal toxicity before symptoms or significant risk of central visual field. Although it is considered rare, retinal toxicity from the intake of Plaquenil can be irreversible even if the drug is discontinued 2, 3. What is Plaquenil Toxicity? The toxicity resulting from the intake of Plaquenil is due to its affinity for melanin-containing structures in the body.

During the first five years of use, the rate of toxicity was found to be 0.7%, rising significantly to more than 1% after five to seven years of use. The prevalence of retinal toxicity has varied among different studies.

Jan 05, 2020 Advanced hydroxychloroquine toxicity presents as a bullseye maculopathy. Since retinal toxicity is usually irreversible, early detection of retinal toxicity and cessation of the offending agent is the best treatment. Corneal toxicity presents as an intraepithelial deposition of the drug into the cornea, which rarely affects vision. Developing toxicity than daily dose/kilogram which older literature focused upon19 Research has shown that the risk of toxicity begins to increase sharply towards 1% after approximately 5 to 7 years of use19 A cumulative dose that increases the risk of retinal toxicity • 1000g total Hydroxychloroquine HCQ Plaquenil Toxicity Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is a medicine commonly used to treat patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. After prolonged use, it can sometimes damage the macula and cause central vision loss.

I took Plaquenil for six years and am really not sure whether I suffered any side effects or not.
