  6. Sep 02, 2009 I have been allergic to sulfa meds for over 30 years. I have been taking plaquenil for about 8 years with no problems. However, I was givin the generic Plaquenil at first, and I did have a reaction to that - until now I didn't reliese was the same as my sulfa reaction.

    If you definitely cannot take the plaquenil, then you should speak with your rheumy about starting may make you start to feel better. There are other anti-malaria drugs on the market that your rheumy can put you on instead of the plaquenil. But, make sure the he/she is convinced that you are actually allergic to the plaquenil.
